USI men's tennis starts GLVC Tournament Friday

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana men's tennis team opens the GLVC Tournament Friday at 7:30 a.m. (CDT) when it plays the University of Missouri-St. Louis in Highland Heights, Kentucky. USI is the second seed from the East Division, while UMSL is the third seed from the West.
 
USI (12-6, 4-1 GLVC) finished the regular season by winning five of its last six matches, including three in a row in the GLVC. The Eagles are appearing in the GLVC Tournament for the 16th time in 17 years since the tournament was changed to the team format.
 
Leading the Eagles in 2010-11 is sophomore Juan Quiroz (Valencia, Venezuela), the number two singles player. Quiroz has a 17-5 overall singles record and a perfect 5-0 mark in the GLVC. He also is a spotless 9-0 at number two singles.
 
In doubles, Quiroz and junior Diego Gimenez (Barquismeto, Venezuela) have combined in the last six matches for a 5-1 mark, including a pair of wins in the GLVC. Gimenez also is USI's number one singles player, producing a 12-9 overall record, 3-2 in the GLVC.
 
Quiroz is followed in the singles column by sophomore Ben Boesing (Floyds Knobs, Indiana). Boesing, who plays number four singles, has fought through injuries to post a 14-1 singles record, 4-0 in the GLVC.
 
The winner of the USI-UMSL match plays the winner of the Drury University and Bellarmine University match Friday at 12:30 p.m. Drury is the top seed in the West, while Bellarmine is the fourth seed from the East. The conference tournament also includes host Northern Kentucky University, the top seed in the East, and the University of Illinois-Springfield, the fourth seed from the West; while Rockhurst University, the second seed in the West, plays Lewis University, the third seed in the East.
 
The GLVC Tournament championship match is set for 8 a.m. Saturday.
