USI Athletics Philosophy Statement
The University of Southern Indiana (USI) subscribes to the precepts and fundamental policies of the NCAA. The University believes a well-conducted intercollegiate athletics program, based on sound educational principles and practices, is a proper part of its mission and that the educational welfare of participating student-athletes is of primary concern.

The University supports the following principles in the belief that these objectives assist in defining Division I and the possible differences between it and other divisions.

This statement is not only binding with USI, but also serves as a guide for the preparation of legislation by Division I and for planning implementation of programs by institutions and conferences.

The University of Southern Indiana:

  • believes in offering the maximum amount of intercollegiate athletics participation to as many of the students as possible, whether the students are athletically recruited or financially assisted;
  • believes in striving for broad participation and competitive excellence, encouraging sportsmanship and fair play, and developing positive societal attitudes in athletic endeavors;
  • believes in scheduling a majority of the competition with other members of Division I, insofar as geographical location and traditional or conference scheduling patterns allow;
  • recognizes the dual objectives in the athletics program of serving both the campus (students, faculty, staff) and the general public (community, area, state);
  • believes in permitting athletically-related financial aid for student-athletes, but on a more modest basis than that permitted in Division I;
  • believes that all members of Division I, including those institutions aspiring to membership of some other division or those unable to subscribe to all the aspects of the Division I philosophy, should commit themselves to that policy and to the regulations and programs of Division I, and
  • believes that the physical welfare of student-athletes is always of paramount consideration.

USI Athletics Inclusion Statement
