EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The No. 36 University of Southern Indiana men's tennis team lost a heart-breaker to visiting Northern Kentucky University, 6-3, Saturday at the USI Tennis Courts.
USI (7-5, 2-1 GLVC) started on a tough note as the Norse claimed all three doubles matches to build a 3-0 lead. The Screaming Eagles lost two of the matches—number one and three doubles—in tie-breakers.
Trailing 4-0 after falling at number three singles, the Eagles started to mount a comeback as sophomore
Juan Quiroz rallied from a one-set deficit to claim USI's first victory of the day at number two singles.
Junior
Diego Gimenez also rallied from a one-set deficit to force a third and deciding set at number one singles. NKU's Martin Leroy, however, turned Gimenez away with a 6-3 victory in the third set to clinch the win for the Norse, who improved to 11-2 overall and 2-0 in the GLVC.
The Eagles, who had a one-set lead at number four singles before senior
Joseph Boesing retired, finished the match by getting straight-set victories from sophomores
Ben Boesing and
Robert Nieters at number five and six singles, respectively.
USI returns to action Wednesday at 4 p.m. when it hosts the University of Missouri-St. Louis in a non-conference men's and women's doubleheader at the USI Tennis Courts.
