Eagles top Kentucky Wesleyan, 7-2, in GLVC opener

OWENSBORO, Ky.—The University of Southern Indiana women's tennis team picked up its first win of the 2008-09 season as it opened GLVC play with a 7-2 win over host Kentucky Wesleyan College Friday afternoon at the KWC Tennis Courts.
USI (1-6, 1-0 GLVC) picked up wins at number two and three doubles to take a 2-1 advantage heading into singles competitions. The Screaming Eagles took five of the six singles to complete the 7-2 victory.Â

Katie Jo Clagg (Terre Haute, Indiana) each won in straight sets at number three and four singles, respectively, after teaming for an 8-2 win at number two doubles. SophomoreÂ
Jennie LaBonte (Indianapolis, Indiana) also recorded a pair of wins, teaming with seniorÂ
Emily Schum (Mt. Vernon, Indiana) for an 8-1 win at number three doubles before winning in straight sets at number five singles.
USI returns to action Saturday when it travels to Louisville, Kentucky, to take on Bellarmine University in a men's and women's doubleheader beginning at 10 a.m. (CDT). The Eagles play their first home match of the spring Sunday when they take on Division I Western Kentucky University in a men's and women's doubleheader beginning at noon.
