Eagles finish sixth at NCAA II East Regional

ALLENDALE, Mich.—The No. 23 University of Southern Indiana women's golf team shot a final round 344 Wednesday and finished sixth at the NCAA II East Region Tournament at The Meadows-Championship Tees Golf Course.

USI finished the tournament with a three-day tally of 1,024 after shooting 338 to open the tournament Monday and 342 in Tuesday's second round. USI's 344 Wednesday was the third-best final-round score in the six-team field.

Grand Valley State University, which shot 319 Wednesday, won the tournament with a three-day tally of 940, while Ferris State University was second after finishing with a three-day total of 958 (317, 305, 336).

The University of Indianapolis finished third with a score of 1,000 (329, 324, 347), while California University of Pennsylvania (329, 325, 353—1,007) and Northern Kentucky University (328, 335, 348—1,011) were fourth and fifth, respectively.

Junior Tara Wiley (Oxford, Indiana) led the Screaming Eagles as she finished in a tie for 14th in the 33-player field with a three-day score of 250 (82, 82, 86), while sophomores Kimberly Gottwald (Ft. Wayne, Indiana) and Jess Dooley (Goshen, Indiana) tied for 17th with scores of 252. Gottwald shot 82 on Monday and finished the tournament with matching 85s, while Dooley shot an 84 all three days.

Grand Valley State University's Ashley Smith was the tournament medalist after finishing the event with a 15-over-par 231 (78, 74, 79).

USI finishes its season after reaching the NCAA II East Region Tournament for the fourth time in the last five years. The Eagles' 327.9 strokes-per-round average was the third-lowest average in the program's history.
