LOCKPORT, Ill.--University of Southern Indiana Men's Tennis suffered a heart-breaking 5-4 Great Lakes Valley Conference setback to No. 45 Lewis University in its regular-season finale Saturday after falling, 9-0, to No. 7 University of Indianapolis Friday afternoon.
Freshmen
Spencer Blandford (Louisville, Kentucky) and
Martim Cafe (United Arab Emirates) earned an 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles for the Screaming Eagles in the loss to Lewis; but the Flyers grabbed victories at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to secure a 2-1 advantage heading into singles competition.
USI (8-12, 3-2 GLVC) split singles play as freshman
Alexander Lawrenz (Hamburg, Germany), junior
Ilia Karelin (Ekaterinburg, Russia) and junior
Andrew Dones (Georgetown, Kentucky) were victorious at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4, respectively. Lawrenz and Dones won their matches in straight sets, while Karelin grabbed a three-set win.
Lewis, however, sealed the match with straight-set wins at No. 1 and No. 6 singles as well as a three-set victory at No. 5 singles.
On Friday, Karelin and Dones lost a closely contested dual at No. 2 doubles, but UIndy was able to secure straight-set victories in all six singles matches.
Despite the losses, the Eagles secured a berth into the GLVC Tournament, where they will face the University of Missouri-St. Louis in the quarterfinals Friday at 9 a.m. at the Cooper Tennis Center in Springfield, Missouri. USI will be the No. 3 seed from the East Division, while the Tritons are the No. 2 seed from the West Division.
