HARDIN, Ky. – The University of Southern Indiana women's tennis team took a trip south to Hardin, Kentucky for a double-header against host Murray State University and Cumberland University (Tenn.), falling 0-7 and winning 6-3, respectively.
USI vs. Murray State
The Eagles (5-2, 0-0 GLVC) kicked off the day against the Racers, a division I opponent, losing in all seven matches.
USI vs. Cumberland
USI looked to bounce back against Cumberland later in the afternoon. The Eagles began the match by sweeping the Phoenix in all doubles sections, first with the duo of senior
Jennifer Mizikar (Batavia, Illinois) and freshman
Lauryn Thompson (Evansville, Indiana) taking the win at number three doubles 6-4. Following at number two doubles was sophomore
Alex Jamison (Floyd Knobs, Indiana) and freshman
Anna McDonald (Tallahassee, Florida) coming victorious with a 6-3 final. The final USI doubles victory came at the number one slot in
Kelsey Shipman (Olney, Illinois) and sophomore
Lauren Hambrock (Terre Haute, Indiana) winning 7-6.
Moving to the singles competition, USI's Shipman started things off with a 6-1, 6-1 win. Cumberland took the next three matches to put pressure on USI with a 4-3 score. Mizikar then lifted the Eagles with a 6-1, 6-1 route to secure the crucial match win for USI. Thompson then added to the total, winning her match 6-2, 6-4.
The Eagles will stay put in Evansville for their next match on Friday, March 2 at the Evansville Tennis Center where the Bulldogs of Ferris State come to town.
