EVANSVILLE, Ind.-- The University of Southern Indiana women's tennis team defeated the University of Illinois Springfield, 8-1, Saturday afternoon at the USI Tennis Courts. The match was the opener of the Great Lakes Valley Conference schedule for the Screaming Eagles who improve to 5-8 on the season and 1-0 in conference action.
The Eagles flew through doubles play with the duo of senior
Elizabeth Wilm (Evansville, Indiana) and junior
Brenna Wu (Evansville, Indiana) getting a win to start the afternoon. The team did not drop a set, winning 8-0. Sophomore
Kelsey Shipman (Olney, Illinois) and junior
Kymberly Brannon (Louisville, Kentucky) picked up an 8-1 to send the match to singles play.
Four USI players picked up wins in singles play along with one default. Shipman earned her win at number-two defeating her opponent 6-1, 6-0. Wu did not drop a set in her match at number-three singles. Brannon was the third Eagle to pick up two wins in the contest winning at number-four, 6-2, 6-2. At number-five, sophomore
Jennifer Mizikar (Batavia, Illinois) failed to allow her UIS opponent to take a set winning 6-0, 6-0.
The Eagles continue conference play next Friday when McKendree University comes to Evansville for an afternoon match up at 2 p.m. On Saturday, the Eagles conclude their non-conference schedule with another 2 p.m. match with Indiana Wesleyan University. Both Friday and Saturday's matches will be at the USI Tennis Courts.
