LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Southern Indiana women's tennis team was defeated by Bellarmine University, 6-3, Friday afternoon in Louisville, Kentucky at the Eddie Webber Tennis Complex. The Screaming Eagles dropped their first Great Lakes Valley Conference match of the year to move their season record to 6-10 and 2-1 in conference play.
The Eagles picked up two of their three wins in doubles play at number two and three. At number-two, sophomore
Kelsey Shipman (Olney, Illinois) and junior
Kymberly Brannon (Louisville, Kentucky) picked up their tenth win of the season together with an 8-3 victory. The sophomore duo of
Jennifer Mizikar (Batavia, Illinois) and
Haley Jones (Fort Branch, Indiana) earned a hard-fought, 8-6, victory over their Bellarmine opponents to send the match into singles play.
The Knights picked up the first four wins of singles play to earn their fifth win of the contest and seal the match victory. Brannon earned the lone USI singles victory at number-four defeating Bellarmine's Marissa Kovach 7-6 (7-2) in the first set. After dropping the second, Brannon rebounded to sweep the third set, 6-0. At number six, Jones was able to take the first set of her match, 7-5, but fell in the second set and the pro-set.
USI will return to Evansville tonight to prepare for the Pumas of Saint Joseph's College. That match will take place tomorrow afternoon at the USI Tennis Courts at 11.am.
