SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – The University of Southern Indiana Women's Tennis team secured a spot in the 2015 Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament with an 8-1 victory over the University of Illinois Springfield Saturday morning in Springfield, Illinois. USI rises to 14-7 overall and 3-3 in the GLVC, while Illinois Springfield ends the 2014-15 season 7-14 overall, 1-5 in the league. The Screaming Eagles' GLVC Tournament bid is their first since the 2012-13 season.
The Screaming Eagles took control of the match quickly by winning all three of the doubles matches. Sophomore
Brenna Wu and freshman
Kelsey Shipman earned an 8-5 win at number one doubles, while the freshman duo of
Jennifer Mizikar and
Ashlee Hasson secured an 8-4 triumph at number two. The Eagles other doubles victory came at number three, as junior
Elizabeth Wilm and sophomore
Kymberly Brannon steamrolled to an 8-0 win.
With a 3-0 advantage heading into singles play, the Eagles continued their dominance capturing victories at number two through six. Brannon secured the USI victory at number four singles with a 6-2, 6-1, while Shipman swept number five singles 6-0, 6-0.
Jennifer Mizikar contributed the second sweep in singles, as the freshman blanked her competition at number six 6-0, 6-0.
The Eagles will compete in the 2015 GLVC Women's Tennis Tournament April 17-18 in Kansas City, Missouri. The tournament is hosted by Rockhurst University.
