USI starts spring with a victory

BELLEVILLE, Ill.  – The University of Southern Indiana women's tennis team started the spring half of the 2011-12 season with a 9-0 shutout of McKendree College Saturday evening in Belleville, Illinois. USI rises to 4-1 overall, while McKedree falls to 1-1.
 
The Screaming Eagles started off on a high note by taking number one and two doubles in quick fashion. Juniors Ellena Stumpf and Lindsey White combined to win at number one doubles, 8-4, while sophomores Morgan Coquerille and Stephanie Smith posted a 9-0 shutout at number two doubles. Junior Logan Ackerman and sophomore Shannon Joyce won at number three by default.
 
USI swept through the singles matches to complete the shutout. Stumpf and sophomore Alyssa Hoover led the way with straight-set 6-0, 6-0 victories at number three and five singles.
 
 USI continues spring non-conference action Friday when it plays Abilene Christian University in Paducah, Kentucky, in an neutral site match. The first home match of the spring for USI is not until March 12 when it hosts Lindsey Wilson College.
