USI clinches top seed with 10-1 win

EVANSVILLE, Ind.  – The 14th-ranked University of Southern Indiana baseball clinched the top seed in the upcoming GLVC Tournament with a 10-1 win over Saint Joseph's College Sunday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. USI finishes the regular season with a 34-15 and 26-8 in the GLVC, while SJC ends the season 22-25-1, 15-18 GLVC.
 
As the top seed in the GLVC Tournament, the Screaming Eagles will start post-season play Thursday at 3:30 p.m. against eighth-seeded Rockhurst University at GCS Ballpark in Sauget, Illinois. The conference tournament runs May 12-15.
 
The Eagles took their first step toward the post season in dominating fashion, taking final game of the series, 10-1. USI took control of the game in the third inning with a three run rally and sealed the contest with a tally in the fifth and six runs in the seventh.
 
USI was led in the 10-run offensive explosion by junior second baseman Benshell Garcia (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) and junior second baseman # Brad Vance# (Louisville, Kentucky). Garcia was three-for-four with three RBIs, including a three-run triple in the six-run seventh.
 
Vance also had a three-for-four game with two doubles and a triple. He was seven-for-17 in the series (.411) with four doubles, a triple, and two RBIs.
 
Junior rightfielder Bryan Chestnut (West Terre Haute, Indiana) joined the hit parade with two hits and three RBIs, while freshman leftfielder Brad Wannemuehler (Evansville, Indiana) had two hits and two runs scored.
 
On the mound, junior right-hander Josh Schultze (Evansville, Indiana) dominated the Pumas through seven innings to get his fifth win of the spring. Schultze (5-4) scattered four hits and struck out six in the victory.
 
Senior left-hander Scott Handley (Schererville, Indiana) pitched a scoreless eighth inning, while senior right-hander Mark Walther (Kankakee, Illinois) allowed a run in the ninth before finishing the game.
