Eagles advance with 5-1 win

SPRINGFIELD, Mo.  – The 36th-ranked University of Southern Indiana men's tennis team advanced the NCAA Division II Tournament preliminary round finals with a 5-1 win over 37th-ranked Wayne State University Sunday afternoon in Springfield, Missouri.  USI, the third seed, moves on to play Drury University, the second seed and host, Monday at 10 a.m. for the right to advance to the NCAA Division II Tournament Championship in Altamonte Springs, Florida, hosted by the Central Florida Sports Commission and Rollins College, May 11-14.
 
With the win, USI rises to 15-7 overall, while Wayne State falls to 17-8.
 
The Screaming Eagles took control of the match in doubles play, winning two of the three matches. Junior Diego Gimenez (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) and sophomore Juan Quiroz (Valencia, Venezuela) put USI on the scoreboard with an 9-8 (14-12) tiebreaker win at number one doubles.
 
USI senior Joseph Boesing (Floyds Knobs, Indiana) and sophomore Rodrigo Flores (Mexico City, Mexico) gave the Eagles their second point with an 8-4 win at number two doubles.
 
The Eagles clinched the victory with a three straight, straight-set wins in singles. Boesing, Flores, and junior Nathan Lattimer (Muncie, Indiana) won at number three, four, and six singles, respectively.
