USI finishes GLVC schedule with a win

EVANSVILLE, Ind.  – The University of Southern Indiana women's tennis team concluded the 2011 GLVC schedule with a 5-4 win over Kentucky Wesleyan College Friday afternoon in Owensboro, Kentucky. USI rises to 6-12 overall and 3-3 in the GLVC, while KWC falls to 13-8, 2-4 GLVC.
 
The victory also clinched a spot in the GLVC Tournament as one of the top four teams in the East Division. The GLVC Tournament runs April 22-23 in Highland Heights, Kentucky.
 
The Screaming Eagles took control early and led 2-1 after doubles action. Senior Michelle Girgenti (Greenwood, Indiana) and sophomore Lindsey White (Batesville, Indiana) started USI off on the right foot with an 8-4 win at number one doubles.
 
USI sophomore Elllena Stumpf (Attendorn, Germany) and freshman Morgan Corquerille (Sellersburg, Indiana) put the Eagles up 2-0 with an 8-4 win of their own at number two doubles.
The Eagles' number three doubles team was less fortunate as junior Logan Ackerman (Mt. Carmel, Illinois) and freshman Stephanie Smith (Sellersburg, Indiana) lost 8-3.
 
 
The Eagles were able to clinch the victory by splitting the six singles matches. Girgenti won in straights sets after winning the second set tie-breaker. Coquerille and Ackerman finished out the USI victory with straight set wins at number three and four singles, respectively.
 
USI concludes the 2010-11 regular season April 20 when it goes across town to play the University of Evansville in a 3:30 p.m. showdown.
