MIDLAND, Mich. – The University of Southern Indiana men's tennis team opened NCAA Division II Tournament action with a 5-1 win over Ferris State University Thursday afternoon in Midland, Michigan. The Screaming Eagles rise to 20-4 overall and will play the host, Northwood University, at 11 a.m. Friday in Midland.
Northwood, which is 14-4 overall, began the NCAA II Tournament opening round with a 5-0 win over a Lewis University.
The Eagles took control of the match with Ferris State early by sweeping the doubles matches. Junior Joeseph Boesing and sophomore
Diego Gimenez won at number one doubles, 9-7, while freshmen
Ben Boesing and
Juan Quiroz was victorious at number two doubles, 8-5.
USI clinched the victory with wins by Quiroz and
Joseph Boesing at number two and three doubles. Quiroz won after his opponent retired in the second set, while
Joseph Boesing won in straight sets.
The only setback for the Eagles was at number six when sophomore
Nathan Lattimer lost in straight sets.
Ferris State finished the year, 11-8.
