CHARLESTON, W.V.—The No. 49 University of Charleston (W.V.) took 2-of-3 doubles matches and was 3-3 in singles play as it edged the University of Southern Indiana women's tennis team, 5-4, Sunday morning.
Senior Katie Jo Clagg and junior Michelle Girgenti posted an 8-4 win at number one doubles for the Screaming Eagles. USI, however, suffered 8-6 setbacks at number two and three doubles as it fell into a 2-1 deficit heading into singles play.
Girgenti lost a three-set battle at number one singles, while Clagg posted a straight-set win at number three singles. Freshman Lindsey White won in straight sets at number four singles, while sophomore Logan Ackerman had a thrilling three-set victory at six singles.
The Screaming Eagles (6-5), however, suffered straight-set losses at two singles and five singles to the host Golden Eagles, who improved to 18-3 with the victory.
USI opens GLVC play Saturday when it visits Bellarmine University in a men's and women's doubleheader. The contest, which is a rematch of a non-conference showdown that USI won in February, is set to begin at 1 p.m. (CDT) in Louisville, Kentucky.
