ELSAH, Ill. – The University of Southern Indiana women's tennis team could not hold an early lead and dropped a close 5-4 decision to the University of Missouri St. Louis. USI falls to 2-1 overall in 2009-10, while UMSL goes to 3-0 this year.
The Screaming Eagles flew out to a fast 3-0 lead to start the spring by sweeping the three doubles matches. Junior Michelle Girgenti (Greenwood, Indiana) and senior Katie Jo Clagg (Terre Haute, Indiana) posted an 8-4 victory at number one doubles, while freshman Lindsey White (Batesville, Indiana) and sophomore Logan Ackerman (Mt. Carmel, Illinois) at number two and senior Gretchen Cantwell (Vincennes, Indiana) and freshman Ellena Stumpf (Attenborn, Germany) at number three closed out the doubles matches with 8-5 and 8-4 wins.
In singles play, the Tritons kicked into gear and won five of six matches. Stumpf got USI's only win in singles, posting a three-set win at number five. The deciding match at number six saw
UMSL's Kristiana Lazarova defeated Ackerman in straight sets at number six, 6-4 and 7-6, and a second set tie-breaker that went to 19-17.
The Eagles opens the home portion of the spring schedule Friday at 6 p.m. when they host Western Kentucky University at Advantage Courts and Fitness.
