USI closes out 2010 regular season this weekend

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana men's soccer team closes out the 2010 regular season this weekend when it hosts Bellarmine University Friday at 5 p.m. and Kentucky Wesleyan College Sunday at noon. The Screaming Eagles also are still mathematically in the hunt for a spot in the GLVC Tournament.

USI (8-7-0, 5-7-0 GLVC) needs a few things to happen if it wants to latch onto one of the final spots in the GLVC Tournament, beginning with two victories at home this weekend. The Eagles also need Bellarmine, Drury University, Saint Joseph's College, and the University of Wisconsin-Parkside to finish the conference schedule at .500.

The GLVC Tournament kicks off October 31 with the top four teams in the league hosting first round matches. The final four teams play the semifinals and the championship match at the highest remaining seed after the first round.

The Eagles enter the weekend with senior forward Simon Rawnsley (England) and sophomore forward Austin Andrekus (St. Charles, Illinois) competing for the team-lead in scoring. Rawnsley leads with 14 points on six goals and two assists, while Andrekus has 13 points on six goals and one assist. Andrekus is tops on the team with three game-winning goals in 2010.

Senior midfielder Michael Simcock (England) has the team lead in assists with five.

Bellarmine (8-4-2, 6-4-2 GLVC) comes to Evansville after battling to a 0-0 double-overtime tie with Missouri University of Science & Technology last Sunday. The Knights are 3-1-1 in the last five matches.

USI leads the all-time series with Bellarmine, 21-10-1, and defeated the Knights, 3-2, on the road last fall. Bellarmine, however, has won three of the last four meetings.

KWC (2-12-1, 0-12-1 GLVC) starts this week in the middle of a 10-game winless streak after dueling Maryville University to a 2-2 double-overtime tie Sunday. The Panthers had lost nine in a row before the tie and have not won since September 15.

The Eagles lead the series with the Panthers, 20-6-2, and have won eight in a row after defeating KWC, 3-0, last year in Owensboro, Kentucky.
