USI falls just short in battle with Bellarmine

EVANSVILLE, Ind.- University of Southern Indiana Men's Soccer fell to Bellarmine University Tuesday evening in a 2-1 battle at Strassweg Field.

The Screaming Eagles (0-2-2) fought back from an early deficit to tie the match late in the first half, but the Knights (4-0-1) scored the go-ahead goal late in the second half.

Sophomore midfielder Edin Cvorovic led the stat sheet with the team's first goal of the season at home on his only shot of the contest. He was followed by junior midfielder Ahiro Nakamae, sophomore midfielder Nolan Stevens, and sophomore forward Kadiri Bello, all of whom each took one shot. Sophomore goalkeeper Jacob English made seven saves in the game, bringing his season total to 22.

Bellarmine came out aggressive early in the match, but English was up to the task with three early saves in the first 15 minutes. However, in the 18th minute of the match, the Knights' junior forward Johan Nissen-Lie found the back of the net to go up 1-0.

The Screaming Eagles found an offensive spark later in the first half, as Cvorovic rocketed a shot from outside the top of the box to score his first goal of the season and knot the game at one going into halftime.

Much like the first half, USI was held to the defensive end of the field for much of the half, facing more pressure by Bellarmine's attack. In the 71st minute of the match, Bellarmine's Nissen-Lie scored his second goal of the match off a deflection to push the Knights back ahead, 2-1. In the waning minutes, the Screaming Eagles made a final offensive push, but a shot from Bello missed just high of the goal. One final quality opportunity never came for USI before the final whistle.

USI Men's Soccer will travel to Marquette University on Saturday, September 12, to kick off a four-game road trip. Saturday's match against Marquette starts at 1 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+, with live stats available on usiscreamingeagles.com .
