Women's Tennis starts year with win

OWENSBORO, Ky. -- The University of Southern Indiana women's tennis team opened the 2009-10 season with a 6-3 win at Brescia University Wednesday evening in Owensboro, Kentucky. USI (1-0) rallied from 3-2 down with four consecutive singles victories to post the win.


Senior Katie Jo Clagg led the Screaming Eagles a pair of victories, starting with a doubles win at number one, 8-2, with junior Michelle Girgenti. Clagg then sparked the Screaming Eagles four-match rally in singles, defeating her opponent at number three in straight sets.


Freshman Lindsey White and sophomore Logan Ackerman also gave the Screaming Eagles a pair of victories teaming up at number three doubles to win, 8-0, and clinching the USI win with a pair of singles victories at number five and six, respectively. The singles wins for White and Ackerman were their first collegiate wins in singles.


The fourth singles win was by freshman Ellena Stump, who posted her first collegiate victory at number four.

USI returns to action September 18 when it travels to Indianapolis, Indiana, to take part in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association regional tournament hosted at University of Indianapolis. The tournament will run September 18-20.
