USI stumbles in first round of GLVC Tournament

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. The University of Southern Indiana women's tennis team finished their season after bowing out of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament Friday morning in Indianapolis, Indiana.
The Screaming Eagles fell to conference foe Southern Illinois University of Edwardsville, 5-1, in the first round of the GLVC Tournament. SIUE was ranked third in the tournament and will advance to play the second seeded Northern Kentucky in the semifinals later this afternoon.
USI was lead by junior Reilly Ackerman (Mt. Carmel, Illinois) and freshman Michelle Girgenti(Greenwood, Indiana) with the team's only win at number one doubles. They defeated SIUE's dominant number-one doubles team of Carli Connors and Laura Horning, 8-6. Connors and Horning have won their last seven doubles matches prior to facing Ackerman and Girgenti. The USI doubles team finishes with an 8-8 overall record for the spring.
The Eagles only lose two seniors Maggie Epkey (Sellersburg, Indiana) and Sam Himes(Shelbyville, Indiana) next fall. Epkey recorded three solo wins at number five singles and recorded three more at number two doubles with Katie Jo Clagg (Terre Haute, Indiana) this season. Himes gave the Screaming Eagles additional help in conference matches with two singles victories over the University of Missouri St. Louis and Kentucky Wesleyan.Â
