EVANSVILLE, Ind. The University of Southern Indiana women's tennis team ended the GLVC season with a 5-6 record, earning it the sixth seed in the conference tournament. USI will be paired against third-seeeded Southern Illinois University of Edwardsville (13-7, 9-2 GLVC) in the first round of the GLVC Tournament at 8:30 a.m. Friday morning. The first round of the tournament is being played at Whiteland High School in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Top performers this year for SIUE have been the team of Carli Connors and Laura Horning, who have won their last seven doubles matches. At number one singles Connors has won her last eight matches while Horning has also been dominant in the number two singles spot.
The tournament will pair Connors up against USI's number one, senior Reilly Ackerman (Mt. Carmel, Indiana), while the combination of Connors and Horning will take on Ackerman and freshman Michelle Girgenti (Greenwood, Indiana) at number one doubles. Ackerman has been a large part of the Eagles strong finish, going 4-2 in singles in April.
In their last match, SIUE defeated USI 8-1 in Edwardsville. Ackerman was out with a toe injury, while sophomore Katie Jo Clagg (Terra Haute, Indiana) was the lone winner for the Eagles defeating Horning in number two singles. The Eagles went on to win their next two matches over conference opponents Bellarmine University and Kentucky Wesleyan College to earn their rightful place in the Tournament.
The winner of the USI/SIUE match will go on to face the winner of Northern Kentucky University (15-3, 10-1 GLVC) and Bellarmine (8-11, 5-6 GLVC) later Friday afternoon. The Championship match will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at Center Grove High School in Indianapolis.
