USI defeats Bellarmine, 6-3

EVANSVILLE, Ind. The University of Southern Indiana women's tennis team defeated Bellarmine 6-3 in a match that began at the USI tennis courts and finished at Tri-State Athletic Club on Friday.
The Screaming Eagles (4-12, 4-6 GLVC) took two of the three doubles matches before rain postponed the start of singles play.
Junior Reilly Ackerman (Mt. Carmel, Indiana) and freshman Michelle Girgenti (Greenwood, Indiana) combined to win their sixth match of the year as a pair with an 8-6 victory over Bellarmine's Elizabeth Bohnert and Katy Sutton at number one singles. Freshman Jennie LaBonte (Indianapolis, Indiana) and sophomore Gretchen Cantwell (Vincennes, Indiana) picked up a win at number three singles. They defeated the Knights' Lauren Cotton and Lindsey McKnight, 8-2, to give USI a 2-1 lead after doubles.
After moving to Tri-State, the GLVC match-up continued with the start of singles action. Coach Keely Porter's team won four out of the six matches to secure its fourth win of the season.
Underclassmen Girgenti and Cantwell each picked up wins for the Eagles. Girgenti defeated Bellarmine's Elizabeth Bohnert 6-1, 6-4 in number two singles, and Cantwell beat Maria Hornung 6-4, 6-3 at number three singles.
Sophomore Katie Jo Clagg (Terre Haute, Indiana) and senior Maggie Epkey (Sellersburg, Indiana) rounded out the victories for USI at number four and number five singles, respectively.
The Screaming Eagles close out the regular season Saturday, April 19 at home against winless Kentucky Wesleyan.
