EDWARDSVILLE, Ill.—Despite winning three straight matches in conference play, the University of Southern Indiana's women's tennis team has dropped its last two matches to conference opponents St. Joseph's College and Southern Illinois University of Edwardsville (11-7, 7-2 GLVC).Â
The Screaming Eagles (3-12, 3-6 GLVC) lost 8-1 Tuesday afternoon to an SIUE team that is ranked third in the conference and on a seven-match winning streak.Â
Sophomore Katie Jo Clagg (Terre Haute, Indiana) was the lone winner for USI as she was defeating Laura Horning 6-4, 3-3 at number two singles before the match was retired. Clagg continues to perform well for the Eagles as she has won her last five singles matches.
As a team, USI remains ninth in the clustered conference standings. Quincy University (12-8, 4-6 GLVC) is a match ahead of the Eagles with a tough two-match stretch ahead of it to close out the regular season—Quincy hosts Drury University and Rockhurst this weekend. The top eight teams advance to the GLVC Tournament, which starts April 25 in Indianapolis, Indiana.Â
USI, which holds the tie-breaker with Quincy, finishes out the regular season at home against conference foes Bellarmine University (8-9, 5-4 GLVC) and Kentucky Wesleyan College (2-10, 0-9 GLVC) Friday and Saturday, respectively.
