SI falls to Wesleyan, 7-2

STUART, Fla. The University of Southern Indiana women's tennis team continued to search for its first dual match win of the spring after suffering a 7-2 loss to Wesleyan University in Stuart, Florida, Monday. The Screaming Eagles fall to 0-3 on the season, while Wesleyan goes to 5-1.
USI was led in the loss by freshman Michelle Girgenti (Greenfield, Indiana). Girgenti started her day by combining with junior Reilly Ackerman (Mt. Carmel, Illinois) to post a victory over Madalina Ursu and Anika Fischer at number one doubles, 9-8 (6).
Girgenti also posted USI's only victory in singles, defeating Ursu in straight sets, 6-3 and 6-2.Â
Eagles' sophomore Gretchen Cantwell (Vincennes, Indiana) and freshman Jennie LaBonte(Indianapolis, Indiana) had early one set leads in their matches at number three and five singles, but fell in three sets.
USI edged out by FIT, 5-4

MELBOURNE, Fla. The University of Southern Indiana women's tennis team came close to getting its first victory of the year, but fell short in a loss to the Florida Institute of Technology, 5-4. USI goes to 0-4, while FIT goes to 8-6.
The Screaming Eagles trailed 2-1 after doubles play. Sophomore Gretchen Cantwell (Vincennes, Indiana) and freshman Jennie LaBonte (Indianapolis, Indiana) posted USI's only doubles win, defeating FIT's Annie Brethour and Sara DiNovi 8-0.
FIT clinched the match victory by winning the first three doubles matches in straight sets. USI made the match close by dominating the second half of the doubles matches.Â
LaBonte and junior Emily Schum (Mt. Vernon, Indiana) won in straight sets at number five and six singles. Sophomore Katie Jo Clagg (Terre Haute, Indiana) also picked up a USI victory at number four singles when FIT's Nicole David retired.
USI finishes its spring break road trip Wednesday at Northwood University of Floria in West Palm Beach.Â
