EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana men's tennis team needed a third-set victory out of sophomore
Andrew McGuire (Greenwood, Indiana) at number three singles to hold off the University of Missouri-St. Louis and notch its first GLVC victory of the season.
USI (2-14, 1-3 GLVC) won all three doubles matches, including a 9-8 (8-6) battle at number three doubles, before seeing the Rivermen win four of the first five singles matches to knot the match at 4-4.
With all other singles matches completed and the number three singles match tied at a set a piece, McGuire won four straight games to defeat UM-St. Louis's Mike Schaaf 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 and tilt the outcome into USI's favor.
The Screaming Eagles also benefited from sophomore
Ryan McDaniel's(Bargersville, Indiana) straight sets victory at number five singles.
USI closes the regular season Saturday when it hosts Quincy University at 9 a.m. A win combined with an UM-St. Louis loss at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville would ensure the Eagles a spot in the GLVC Tournament.
