INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana women's tennis team posted its first victory of the year with an 8-1 decision at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Thursday afternoon. USI raises its record to 1-1 overall and in the GLVC, while SIUE falls to 0-2 overall and in the GLVC.
The Screaming Eagles took two of the three doubles matches to open the dual match. Senior Ashley Rees (Vincennes, Indiana) and junior Audra Bartelt (Jasper, Indiana) won 8-1 at number one doubles, while junior Kimberly Decker (Brownsburg, Indiana) and sophomore Reilly Ackerman(Allendale, Illinois) won 8-0 at number two.
USI took all six the singles matches in straight sets. Sophomore Maggie Coffman won at number six singles in straight sets and did not lose a point in the 6-0, 6-0 victory.
Rees and Bartelt won at two and three singles, respectively, 6-1, 6-0, while Ackerman recorded the number one singles victory, 6-1, 6-1. Decker picked up her first victory of the year at number four singles, 6-1, 6-2.
Senior Cassy Froderman (Brazil, Indiana) had the closest match at number five singles, winning 6-3, 7-6.
USI resumes action Friday at 4 p.m. against Rockhurst University in a GLVC match. The dual match will mark the first time USI and Rockhurst will square off in a GLVC contest. The Eagles will conclude the weekend road-swing at Drury University Saturday at 9 a.m.
