OWENSBORO, KY. – The University of Southern Indiana women's tennis team finished third in the GLVC Tournament, defeating Rockhurst University, 5-3, in the third place match Saturday morning at Moreland Park in Owensboro, Kentucky. USI has finished in the top three of the GLVC each of the last seven years.
Individually, USI senior Ashley Rees (Vincennes, Indiana) and sophomore Reilly Ackerman(Allendale, Illinois) were named All-GLVC. Rees has been named All-GLVC each of her four years at USI, while the honor was the second for Ackerman.
The pair also clinched third place in the GLVC with a pair of singles victories Saturday morning. Ackerman defeated Rockhurst's Kristin Davis in three-sets at number one singles, while Rees defeated the Hawk's Heather Renier in straight sets at number two singles.
In the doubles matches, Rees also reached a milestone by tying Emily Blinzinger for the USI all-time doubles record of 48. She combined with junior
Audra Bartelt(Jasper, Indiana) for a 8-6 win at number one doubles to start the Screaming Eagles on their way to victory over Rockhurst.
USI swept the doubles matches to start the match with Rockhurst. Ackerman and junior
Kimberly Decker (Brownsburg, Indiana) won a close 9-8 decision at number two doubles, while sophomore
Maggie Coffman (Sellersburg, Indiana) and senior
Cassy Froderman (Brazil, Indiana) won handily at number three doubles, 8-3.
The Eagles reached the third place match by defeating Lewis University, 5-2, in the opening round Friday morning and falling, 5-0, to Drury University during the semifinals in the afternoon.
In the win over Lewis, Bartelt and Rees at number one doubles and Ackerman and Decker at number doubles posted close 9-7 and 8-3 victories, respectively. Rees, Decker, Coffman closed out the match with singles victories to allow USI to advance to the semifinals.
