INDIANAPOLIS, IN The University of Southern Indiana women's tennis team fell short of its first GLVC title since 1985, falling in the championship match to the University of Indianapolis, 5-3, Saturday morning at the Indianapolis Tennis Center. Third seeded USI concludes the fall season with a 10-3 record, while top-seeded Indianapolis goes to 14-2.
The Screaming Eagles jumped out to an early lead in the match, winning two of the three doubles matches. USI won at number one doubles – All-GLVC junior Ashley Rees (Vincennes, Indiana) and GLVC Freshman of the Year Sara Wilhoite (Connersville, Indiana) – and number two doubles – sophomore Audra Bartelt (Jasper, Indiana) and freshman Maggie Coffman (Sellersburg, Indiana) – by identical 8-6 margins.
Wilhoite posted USI's only victory in singles, winning in straight sets at number one. The Greyhounds came back to win in straight sets at number two, three, five, and six to claim the championship.
The Eagles will look to the spring when the season will restart their quest for their second NCAA Division II appearance in the last three years.
