NASHVILLE, Tenn.—University of Southern Indiana Men's Track & Field saw a school-record fall and a total of five student-athletes make noise inside the Screaming Eagles' record books as it wrapped up the Music City Challenge Saturday.
Junior
Cole Hess set a school-record in the 800 meters with his fifth-place time of one minute, 51.73 seconds. His time broke
Isaac Stanford's previous mark of 1:53.05. Hess, who ranks fourth in the OVC and 35th in the Great Lakes Region in the 800 meters, also holds the USI freshman record of 1:53.17, which he set two years ago.
Junior
Alex Nolan and freshman
Kraedyn Young made their marks in USI's record book on Saturday with their efforts in the 3,000 meters. Nolan was fifth with a time of 8:07.24, while Young set his second USI freshman record of the season as he obliterated the previous mark by more than 10 seconds with his ninth-place time of 8:08.61.
Nolan's effort moved him into fourth on USI's all-time indoor 3,000-meter list, while Young moved into sixth on USI's all-time list. Nolan's mark also ranks first in the OVC and 30th in the Great Lakes Region, while Young is second in the OVC and 34th in the region.
Young also set the freshmen record in the mile two weeks ago at the John Thomas Terrier Classic with his time of 4:07.72 and was less than half a second away from Hess's freshman record in the 800 meters with his time of 1:53.56 three weeks ago at the PNC Bellarmine Classic. He currently ranks second in the OVC in the 3,000 meters, fourth in the mile and 10th in the 800 meters.
The Screaming Eagles also had strong efforts in the mile, where sophomores
Layden Wagoner and
Griffen Wheeler cracked USI's all-time top 10. Wagoner finished in 4:09.22, while Wheeler finished in 4:10.54. They currently rank eighth and ninth, respectively, on USI's all-time list and sixth and seventh in the OVC this season.
USI returns to action when it competes at the Ohio Valley Conference Championships February 24-25 at the Norton Healthcare Sports & Learning Center in Louisville, Kentucky.
