MADISON, Ill. - University of Southern Indiana Men's Golf placed 10th in the Dolenc Invitational hosted by Ohio Valley Conference rival Southern Illinois University Edwardsville on Monday and Tuesday. This was the third time USI has competed in this event, previously finishing as high as seventh last fall.
As a team, USI shot a three-round 867 (285-289-293) for the tenth slot. The Eagles had two golfers finish in the top 15 for the entire tournament. Senior
Jason Bannister (Laguna Niguel, California) finished in a tie for 11th place following a score of 209 (66-72-71) for the tournament. Junior
Carter Goebel (Breese, Illinois) finished the tournament only one stroke behind with a score of 210 (70-66-74), earning him a tie for 15th place.
Round 1
The Screaming Eagles finished the first round of the invitational in a tie for 10th place with Bellarmine University at a team score of 285.
Bannister led the flock shooting 66 (-5) in the first round, putting him in fourth place for the round. Goebel finished in the top 25 for the first round shooting 70 (-1).
Round 2
Two Eagles found improvement in the second round. Goebel lowered his score by four strokes going from 70 to 66 for the round, finishing the second round in 11th place overall and first on the team. Senior
Sam Vertanen (Ames, Iowa) also made a four-stroke increase in the second round improving from 77 to 73.
USI finished the second round falling to 11th place with a team score of 547 overall and 289 for the round. The Eagles sat two strokes behind 10th-place Weber State University.
Round 3
USI earned 10th place in the final round with a 293 (+9) performance, one stroke behind ninth-place Weber State.
UP NEXT FOR THE EAGLES
USI will play in the Grover Page Classic hosted by University of Tennessee at Martin September 16-17. This will be the first time that the Eagles will be competing in this event.
