EVANSVILE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana baseball junior second baseman Darin Mastroianni (Huntersville, North Carolina) was named College Division third team Academic All-American by ESPN The Magazine and the College Sports Information Directors of America. Mastroianni is the second USI baseball player to be named Academic All-American, following Matt Keener, who was named to the first team in 2004 and 2005.

The College Division half of the Academic All-American program includes NCAA Division II and III and NAIA institutions in the United States and Canada. Student athletes must be in their second year of competition at an institution and have maintained a 3.2 grade point average.

Mastroianni helped lead the resurgence of the Screaming Eagles that concluded with a final four appearance at the NCAA Division II Baseball Championships. The Eagles (43-23) bowed out of the tournament after losing to both of the national tournament finalists.

USI finished the year 25 games better than 2006 and the NCAA II North Central Region champions.

The award adds to Mastroianni's resume for 2007 that includes being named first team All-American, North Central Region Player of the Year, first team All-North Central Region, North Central Regional Most Outstanding Player, North Central Regional All-Tournament, GLVC Player of the Year, and first team All-GLVC.

Statistically, the business administration major led the GLVC and team in 15 offensive and defensive categories. He had a team-best .409 batting average and set the USI single-season record with 97 hits and 64 stolen bases in 66 games. He also had 43 RBIs, 13 doubles, seven triples, and two home runs (one an inside the park slam).

Nationally, Mastroianni led the nation in stolen bases per game.

Mastroianni joins USI's previous Academic All-American honorees Sheri Kaiser (Volleyball, 1993 third team) Amber Huse (Softball, 1995 third team) Karianne Osowski (Softball, 1995 first team) LeAnn Freeland (women's basketball, 1996 third team and 1997 first team) Andrew Majxner (men's tennis, second team) Duncan Bray (men's soccer, second team) Kristina Kavanaugh (volleyball, first team) and Keener (baseball, first team 2004 and 2005).
