SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The University of Southern Indiana men's tennis team vanquished University of Missouri-St Louis 5-2 on Friday, advancing to the semi-finals of the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament.
USI swept the Tritons in all three doubles matches, first starting with junior
Andrew Dones (Georgetown, Indiana) and freshman
Alexander Lawrenz (Hamburg, Germany) securing the win 8-5 at number one doubles. Freshman
Spencer Blandford (Louisville, Kentucky) and sophomore
Kooper Falkenstein (Jeffersonville, Indiana) followed with an 8-5 win of their own. The final USI doubles win came with senior
Samuel Kiladejo (London, United Kingdom) and junior
Ilia Karelin (Ekaterinburg, Russia) getting the win in a tie-breaker 9-8 (7-5).
The Eagles then notched two individual wins in the singles tournament. Dones kicked things off at the number four spot 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 to bring USI one-step closer. Karelin secured the final win for USI 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 to advance to the second round of the GLVC Tournament.
USI will play the University of Indianapolis, who defeated Rockhurst University 5-0, in their next match at the Cooper Tennis Center in Springfield, Missouri on Saturday, April 21 at 10 a.m.
