EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana men's tennis team completed a mid-week trip to Michigan where it took on Northwood University and Grand Valley State University, falling 4-5 and 3-6 in both matches.
USI vs. NORTHWOOD
The Eagles' (4-3, 0-0 GLVC) first stop was in Midland, Michigan on Thursday where it faced the Timberwolves. The lone doubles victory came at number-three doubles with an 8-3 final from the duo of junior
Andrew Dones (Georgetown, Indiana) and junior
Ilia Karelin (Ekaterinburg, Russia).
USI took three additional wins in the singles competition, first at number two singles with freshman
Alexander Lawrenz (Hamburg, Germany) 7-6, 4-6, and 6-1. Karelin then followed up with his second victory of the day at number three singles 6-4, 7-5. The final singles competition victory came from freshman
Spencer Blandford (Louisville, Kentucky) with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 decision.
USI vs. GRAND VALLEY STATE
USI turned around and traveled to Allendale, Michigan on Friday for a duel with the Lakers, taking home two doubles victories and a lone singles win. Lawrenz and Blandford kicked off the day with a number two doubles win 8-6. The second came with Dones and Karelin at number three doubles 8-6.
Karelin finished his match at number three singles with a 6-4, 6-7, 1-0 conquest to finish 4-0 in two days.
The Eagles will return home for their next match on Friday, March 2 at the Evansville Tennis Center where it plays host to the Ferris State University Bulldogs.
