KANSAS CITY, Mo.—The No. 25 University of Southern Indiana men's tennis team saw a 2-1 lead evaporate late Saturday night as No. 15 Drury University rallied for a 5-2 win over the Screaming Eagles in the semifinals of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament.
USI (15-6) posted a 9-7 win at No. 1 doubles and a 9-8 win at No. 3 doubles to gather a 2-1 advantage heading into singles competition.
Drury (20-1), however, earned a straight-set victory at No. 4 singles to even the match at 2-2; then got straight-set wins at No. 5 and No. 3 singles to go up, 4-2. The Eagles were in position to grab a win at No. 1 singles to cut into the Drury lead, but before junior
Jack Joyce (Bournemouth, England) could close the door on Maximilian Hepp in the third set, the Panthers claimed a three-set triumph at No. 2 singles to end any chance of a USI rally.
Joyce, who had lost the opening-set to Hepp, 6-4, rallied with a 6-2 win in the second set. He was up 6-5 in the third set when the match was decided with Sebastien Amato's three-set win over USI freshman
Samuel Kiladejo (London, England) at No. 2 singles.
Joyce and red-shirt freshman
Aaron Barris (Marietta, Georgia) were victorious at No. 1 doubles, while junior
Joel Stern (Mjoelby, Sweden) and freshman
Anthony Van Rompay (Schilde, Belgium) earned USI's win at No. 3 doubles.
Drury's triumph at No. 2 doubles was a nail-biter, with Amato and Christian Ibsen defeating Kiladejo and freshman
Roman Laga (Baiersbronn, Germany), 9-8.
USI's consolation match with the University of Missouri-St. Louis Sunday was cancelled due to rain. The Eagles will wait to find out their NCAA II Tournament fate Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. (CDT) when the pairings are announced on www.ncaa.com.
