EVANSVILLE, Ind.—Highlighted by a triumph over the 3
rd-ranked doubles team in the country, the 25
th-ranked University of Southern Indiana Men's Tennis team posted an important 6-3 victory over Lewis University Saturday at Wesselman Park.
Facing the #3 doubles duo in the nation, junior
Jack Joyce and redshirt freshman
Aaron Barris stormed to an 8-5 win to push their doubles record to 6-2 on the season. As doubles partners. Joyce and Barris have won their last four matches and six of their last seven. The Flyers' top doubles tandem of Armand Levandi and Erik Aunapuu entered the match with an 11-0 record against division two competition. Before today's match, the third-ranked duo had yet to allow an opponent to record more than five game victories.
The Screaming Eagles (9-5, 2-1 GLVC) would take triumphs at number two and three doubles, as well, to take a 3-0 lead in the match into singles competition.
Lewis (8-5, 2-1 GLVC) would earn revenge at number one singles, as the 17
th-ranked singles player in the nation, Levandi, topped the Eagles' Joyce, 6-4, 6-1 in straight sets. USI found a response, as junior
Joel Stern put the Eagles ahead 4-1 with a 6-0, 6-0 steamrolling at number five singles.
The Eagles would wrap up the match with a victory at number six by Barris, as the Marietta, Georgia native secured the win with a 6-3, 6-4 result. USI would also add a 6-3, 7-5 conquest at number four singles by freshman
Roman Laga, while Lewis took victories in number two and three singles.
The crucial Great Lakes Valley Conference victory pushes the Eagles into second in the GLVC East division behind the University of Indianapolis with three GLVC matches left this season.
A full week awaits USI with four contests on the docket in the next seven days. The Eagles hit the road to take on Indiana University-Southeast in a non-conference matchup in New Albany, Indiana on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. USI returns home for a non-conference match with Oakland City University Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at the USI Tennis Courts. The weekend features road matches at St. Joseph's College Friday at 2 p.m. in Rensselaer, Indiana before heading to Lebanon, Illinois for a match against Mckendree University on Saturday at noon.
