EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana Men's Tennis team opened Great Lakes Valley Conference competition with an 8-1 rout of Bellarmine University Saturday at the USI Tennis Courts.
The Screaming Eagles (7-4, 1-0) took control in doubles play, as USI jumped out to a 2-1 lead with victories at number one and two doubles. Junior
Jack Joyce and redshirt freshman
Aaron Barris powered the Eagles to an 8-5 victory at number one, while the freshman duo of
Roman Laga and
Anthony Van Rompay squeaked out an 8-6 triumph at number two.
In singles competition, the Eagles took all six duels, including straight-set victories at number one through five. Joyce cruised to his ninth singles victory of the season with a 6-1, 6-1 win at number one. Junior
Joel Stern earned a 6-2, 6-0 victory at number five singles, while Barris' 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 win at number six singles secured the Eagles' 8-1 triumph.
The Eagles return to action Monday when host the University of Missouri-St. Louis. The men's and women's non-conference doubleheader is slated for a 2 p.m. start at the USI tennis courts.
