SAINT LEO, Fla.—The No. 22 University of Southern Indiana men's tennis team came within an eyelash of upsetting No. 8 Saint Leo University Thursday; but a deciding three-set loss at No. 4 singles by freshman Josh Walden allowed the host Lions to pull out a 5-4 victory over the Screaming Eagles.

Walden paired with sophomore Jack Joyce for an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles, but the Eagles suffered an 8-5 loss at No. 1 doubles and an 8-6 setback at No. 3 doubles as they went into singles play trailing 2-1.

Joyce and senior Santiago Lopez gave the Eagles three-set victories at No. 2 and No. 1 singles, respectively, while sophomore Joel Stern earned a super-set tie-breaker for a three-set victory at No. 5 singles.

Saint Leo (9-3), however, picked up straight-set wins at No. 3 and No. 6 singles, then sealed the victory with a 6-1, 0-6, 6-4 win at No. 4.

USI (9-4) returns to action Friday at 9 a.m. (CDT) when it takes on No. 46 New York Institute of Technology in Saint Leo, Florida. The Eagles conclude their spring break trip Friday at 2 p.m. when they visit Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida.
