Eagles shutout Dragons to open series

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team scored five times in the first inning and went on to defeat Tiffin University, 8-0,  Friday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. USI rises to 3-4 overall, while Tiffin goes to 1-3.
 
The Screaming Eagles sent 11 batters to the plate in the first inning and scored all the runs they would need for the victory. USI plated its five run on five walks, two hits, and a hit batter.
 
The Eagles would go on to seal the victory with a tally in the fifth and one more in the eighth for the 8-0 shutout win.
 
Leading the USI hitting attack was junior centerfielder Tyler Mikrut (Edwardsville, Illinois), who scored twice and had three RBIs on a pair of hits and a walk. Senior second baseman Caleb Eickhoff (Evansville, Indiana) followed with a pair of RBIs and a double, while senior leftfielder Brent Weinzapfel (Evansville, Indiana) scored twice and had a double.
 
On the mound, junior right-hander Ben Wright (Newburgh, Indiana) picked up his first victory of the year. Wright (1-1) pitched five scoreless innings, allowing four hits and striking out two.
 
Junior right-hander Scott Haag (Ft. Wayne, Indiana) followed Wright, allowing a pair of walks and one strike out in three scoreless innings, while sophomore right-hander Nicholas Heinz (Vincennes, Indiana) made his first appearance of the year in pitching a scoreless ninth.
 
The Eagles and the Dragons conclude the three-game series on Saturday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader. Saturday's match-up was converted to a 1 p.m. doubleheader due to the forecast of inclement weather on Sunday.
