USI drops four-game series to Missouri S&T

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The 12
th-ranked University of Southern Indiana baseball team suffered a second-straight doubleheader sweep at the hands Missouri University of Science & Technology Saturday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. Missouri S&T took the opener, 8-2, and the nightcap, 8-4.
USI, which has lost its last six games, falls to 11-7 overall and 2-6 in the GLVC, while Missouri S&T rises to 7-9, 6-2 GLVC.
In the opener, the Miners came from behind with six runs in the third and fourth innings before cruising to the 8-2 win over the Eagles. USI freshman leftfielder
Hamilton Carr (Evansville, Indiana) provided the only highlights in the first game, finishing the game a triple short of the cycle.
Carr doubled and scored in the first inning to give USI its first lead of the series before hitting his first collegiate home run in the bottom of the third to pull the Eagles within one, 3-2.
USI junior right-hander
David Toth (Danville, Indiana) took the loss for the Eagles. Toth (3-1) allowed five runs, three earned, on four hits and two walks in three innings of work. Junior right-hander
Brandon Shaw (Cuba, Illinois) followed Toth to the mound, allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits.
The Eagles jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the nightcap, but could not hold on as the Miners rallied to win 8-4 with four runs in the ninth.
USI posted its largest lead of the weekend with four runs in the opening frame of the nightcap before Missouri S&T took advantage of four Eagle miscues. The Miners scored unearned tallies in the second, fifth, and the sixth to tie the game, 4-4.
Missouri S&T pulled ahead in the ninth with a four run frame on three hits and three walks off of three USI hurlers.

Reece Rounder (Evansville, Indiana), senior catcher
Colton White (Springfield, Illinois), and freshman first baseman
Andrew Cope (Evansville, Indiana) led the Eagles' attack in the nightcap with two hits each.
On the bump, senior left-hander
Adam Carver (Arthur, Illinois) took the loss after being charged for the first run in the ninth. Carver (0-2) allowed two runs, one earned, on one hit and three walks overall in relief.
The Eagles got a strong start from sophomore right-hander
Craig Austin (Evansville, Indiana). Austin, who was making his first start as an Eagle, went four-plus innings allowing three hits and one unearned run. The four innings almost doubled his season total.
USI hits the road next week in the GLVC, traveling to Saint Joseph's College in Rensselaer, Indiana, for a four game series on March 29-30. The next home series for the Eagles is April 2-3 when they host Kentucky Wesleyan College for a pair of 6 p.m. games under the lights at the USI Baseball Field.
