EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The 12th-ranked University of Southern Indiana baseball team came up short in both ends of a doubleheader with Missouri University of Science & Technology, falling 4-1 and 5-2, Friday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. USI, which has lost its last four games, falls to 11-5 overall and 2-4 in the GLVC, while Missouri S&T rises to 5-9, 4-2 GLVC.

In the opener, the Screaming Eagles spotted the Miners a run in the first, two in the third, and a tally in the seventh before falling 4-1. Eagles' sophomore right-hander Ben Wright (Newburgh, Indiana) took the loss after allowing four runs, three earned, on eight hits. Wright (3-2) also struck out one in seven innings of work.

USI's lone tally came in the bottom of the seventh when junior second baseman A.J. Dokey (Howell, Michigan) scored when freshman centerfielder Kyle Kempf (Evansville, Indiana) reached on a fielder's choice. Dokey started USI's only rally of the game when he and junior second baseman Matt Bowles (Mt. Washington, Kentucky) reached on errors to begin the seventh.

Junior designated hitter Brent Weinzapfel (Evansville, Indiana) was USI's top hitter in the opener with three hits. The opener was Weinzapfel's return to the line-up after missing seven games with an injury.

The Miners posted its 5-2 in win in the nightcap by jumping out to a 4-0 lead for a second game in a row. Missouri S&T scored one in the first, two in the third, and one in the fifth to get its four run advantage. USI tried to get back into the game with a run in the bottom half of the fifth, only to see Missouri S&T get the run back in the top of the sixth.

The Eagles got their run in the fifth when junior shortstop Caleb Eickhoff (Evansville, Indiana) scored on a sacrifice fly senior leftfielder B.J. Willis (Cincinnati, Ohio). Eickhoff advanced into scoring position when he reached on an error and advanced to third on an error in a failed pickoff.

USI tried to rally for a second time in the bottom of the seventh, but could only scratch one run across. Junior rightfielder Brad Wannemuehler (Evansville, Indiana) singled to lead off the ninth, advanced on a balk, moved to third on a ground out, and scored on a ground out by Kempf. Kempf was the only USI hitter to get multiple hits in the nightcap.

On the mound, Bowles (3-2) took the loss after allowing five runs on 11 hits in 5.1 innings of work. Junior right-hander Brandon Shaw (Cuba, Illinois) finished the game with 1.2 innings of scoreless work.

The Eagles and the Miners conclude the four-game series with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Sunday.
