KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Freshman
Andrew Cope had three hits and an RBI Saturday afternoon for the 30
th ranked University of Southern Indiana baseball team. However, the Screaming Eagles dropped both games at Rockhurst University 1-0 in game one and 5-4 in the nightcap.
Game One
Sophomore
Ben Wright was the tough luck pitcher in the third game of the series as he pitched a complete game seven hitter. However, Rockhurst scored the only run needed in the fourth with two outs.
Wright (3-1) retired the first two batters in the fourth on a strike out and ground out, but a two-out walk came around to score.
Offensively for the Eagles, they had just two runners advance into scoring position over the final three innings as Thomas Woodard stymied the USI bats. Woodard allowed just five hits over seven innings, walked three and fanned nine.
Game Two
USI (11-3, 2-2) jumped on top with a three-run first inning that began with
Kyle Kempf reaching base on an error.
Two batters later, senior
Colton White drove him home on a single down the left field line. White would come around two batters later after a second error allowed him to score from second.
Cope would bring the last run home of the frame when he grounded out to first, which allowed senior
Reece Rounder to score.
The Hawks (6-5, 2-2), however, scored once in the first and three times in the second to grab a 4-3 advantage. USI though would tie the game in the fourth on a Kempf RBI single.
In the fifth, Rockhurst would score the game-winner run after three straight batters reached base.
Junior
Adam Carver (0-1) took loss despite pitching three solid innings of relief. Carver allowed four hits, walked two and struck out three.
The Eagles return home Tuesday and Wednesday to play the University of Montevallo for a pair of single games.
