USI battles 15th ranked Saint Leo close

SAINT LEO, Fla. –
University of Southern Indiana seniors Juan Quiroz and Rodrigo Flores won No.3 doubles, while junior Santiago Lopez and senior Ben Boesing took their singles matches, but the 41st ranked Screaming Eagles lost a close contest to No. 15 Saint Leo University 6-3 Sunday afternoon.
 
In No. 1and No. 2 doubles USI lost its matches 8-5 and 8-4, while Quiroz and Flores were winners 9-7.
 
Sophomore Michael Kuzaj lost at No.1 singles, falling in the third-set tiebreaker, 6-2, 5-7, 5-7. Flores, meanwhile, at No. 6 singles won his first set 7-6, but lost 0-3 and then retired.
 
In the Eagles two victories in singles, Lopez was a winner 7-5, 6-2, while Boesing took his No.4 singles match 6-4, 6-3.
 
“We played hard," said head coach Chris Crawford. "Saint Leo is ranked 15th, and we hung with them the entire match.”
 
USI's next action is Tuesday, when it takes on Southeastern University at 3 p.m. in Lakeland, Florida.
