FRANKFORT, Ky.—The University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team suffered its first loss of the 2013-14 season Thursday evening as Kentucky State University claimed a 78-72 win over the Screaming Eagles.

USI (4-1) led 65-61 with less than four minutes to play following a pair of free throws by junior forward/center Anna Hackert, but a 6-0 Kentucky State run during the next minute allowed the Thorobreds to retake a lead that they had possessed for more than 27 minutes of the game.

Hackert, who led the Eagles with 28 points and nine rebounds, answered with a layup with just over two minutes to play, giving the Eagles a 67-66 advantage. She also tied the game with a free throw with 1:31 to play.

Senior guard LaShell West's layup with just over a minute on the clock gave Kentucky State a 70-68 lead, beginning a 7-1 run for the Thorobreds.

Junior guard Autumn Miller cut the deficit in half with the second of a two-shot foul, but USI struggled in the final minute-and-a-half from the charity stripe as it missed five free throws.

Kentucky State (4-4), meanwhile, hit 8-of-10 shots from the free throw line in the final minute as it salted away the victory.

The Eagles, who trailed 37-36 at the break, struggled from the field, particularly from three-point range where they shot just 2-of-11 (.182). Outside of Hackert, who was 11-of-17 from the field, the Eagles went just 9-of-39 (.231) from the floor.

USI made up the difference at the free throw, where it went 30-of-40; but just 3-of-8 in the final 1:31.

In addition to Hackert, the Eagles got 13 points from senior guard Stephanie Carpenter and 10 points from junior guard Taylor Stevenson. Carpenter was just 2-of-12 from the field, but went 9-of-10 from the free throw line.

Stevenson was big for the Eagles late in the first period as she scored seven points in the final four minutes to keep the Eagles, who trailed by as many as eight points in the first 20 minutes, within striking distance.

Hackert gave the Eagles a three-point lead with 16 minutes to play in the second period as she connected on two free throws and a layup. But with Hackert on the bench with four fouls—she fouled out with 45 seconds to play—Kentucky State was able to pull in front for a brief period of time.

Senior guard Jessica Parker sunk the second of USI's two three-pointers to give the Eagles a 61-57 advantage with less than five minutes. Hackert followed with a jumper and two free throws to put USI up 65-61.

The Eagles return to the Physical Activities Center Saturday at 1 p.m. when they host Bluefield State College.
