EVANSVILLE, Ind.  – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team scored 12 runs in the nightcap to salvage the series finale from Bellarmine University Saturday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. The Knights won the opener, 3-1, while the Screaming Eagles took the nightcap, 12-3.

USI sees its record go to 15-16 overall and 6-12 in the GLVC, while Bellarmine goes to 18-11, 10-4 GLVC.

The Eagles spotted the Knights a lead for the fourth-straight game in the finale of the series, but this time the bats came to life in the middle innings as they bashed their way to the 12-3 win.

Trailing 3-0, USI got the scoreboard in the third on a RBI single by junior catcher Colton White (Springfield, Illinois) to score sophomore rightfielder Brad Wannemuehler (Evansville, Indiana) to cut the deficit to 3-1. The Eagles would take the lead, 4-3, an inning later on a RBI fielder's choice by senior second baseman Ryan Kaczmarski (Mishawaka, Indiana) and a two-run triple by senior first baseman Todd Martin (Rockport, Indiana).

USI would seal the victory with a seven-run seventh to push the margin to 12-3. The seven-run rally, in which the Eagles sent 12 men to the plate, was highlighted by a two-run triple by senior designated hitter Dylan Mooney (St. Charles, Missouri); a RBI-double by Kaczmarski; and a two-run single by White.

Mooney finished the game with two RBIs and tied a season-high with three hits, while White drove in a team-high three runs on two hits. Martin, sophomore rightfielder Brent Weinzapfel (Evansville, Indiana), senior leftfielder Bryan Chestnut (West Terre Haute, Indiana), and Kaczmarski joined the fourth-game parade to the plate with two hits each.

On the mound, sophomore right-hander Jim Mulvaney (Mt. Vernon, Illinois) picked up his first win of the year in relief of junior right-handed starter Keith Greer (Lowell, Indiana). Mulvaney (1-0) allowed one hit and struck out one in 3.1 innings of work to get the victory.

Greer went the first 4.2 innings, allowing eight hits and three runs in getting the no decision. Sophomore left-hander Jordan Lorezno (Seymour, Indiana) pitched a perfect ninth in his collegiate debut to finish the game for the Eagles, setting down three of the four batters that he faced.

Bellarmine scored three times in the first inning of the opener and held on to defeat USI, 3-1. USI left six runners on base and missed a chance to tie the score in the fifth when it had runners at second and third and one out.

The lone USI tally came in the fourth inning when Weinzapfel scored on a fielding error by the Bellarmine rightfielder Austin Crutcher after a single by USI junior third baseman Brennan Malham (Auburn, Illinois).

USI senior right-hander Silas Dill (Bernie, Missouri) took the loss for USI, pitching the first 3.2 innings. Dill (2-6) allowed the three first inning runs and five hits, while striking out three. Junior left-hander Adam Carver (Arthur, Illinois) and freshman right-hander Justin Ahlbrand (Evansville, Indiana) finished the game for USI, combining to pitch 3.1 scoreless innings.

USI returns to the road next weekend when it travels to Somers, Wisconsin, to play a four-game series at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. The next home game for the Eagles is April 17 when they host Kentucky Wesleyan College for a 6 p.m. contest, beginning a seven-game homestand.
