EVANSVILLE, Ind.—University of Southern Indiana sophomore
Santiago Lopez was named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week for the second time this spring following his performances this past weekend.
Lopez, a business administration major, helped guide the No. 32 Screaming Eagles to two road victories, including a 6-3 win over No. 36 Northern Kentucky University.
On the weekend, Lopez went a combined 4-0 with two wins at number one doubles and number two singles.
Lopez began the week by pairing with freshman
Michael Kuzaj for a 9-8 win over Bellarmine University's Alex Chanley and Anton Rabinov at number one doubles on Friday. He returned later in the day for a straight-set win over Jacob Knagehjelm as the Eagles cruised to a 9-0 victory over the Knights.
On Saturday, Lopez and Kuzaj helped USI grab a 2-1 edge over Northern Kentucky in doubles action as the duo teamed up for an 8-6 victory over the Norse's Tyler Fraser and Pierce Kohls. He finished the day with a three-set, come-from-behind win over Martin Leroy at number two singles.
For the season, Lopez is 12-2 in singles action and 12-1 in doubles play. He has helped the Eagles to a 15-2 overall record and a 2-0 mark in GLVC play.
The Eagles return to action Friday at 2 p.m. when they host No. 37 Lewis University in a men's and women's GLVC doubleheader at the USI Tennis Courts. The Flyers are currently 13-2 overall, 2-0 in GLVC play.
