USI breaks losing streak in nightcap

OWENSBORO, Ky.  – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team broke a seven-game losing with a doubleheader split at Kentucky Wesleyan College Tuesday afternoon in Owensboro, Kentucky. USI won the nightcap, 4-2, while KWC won the opener, 10-9.
 
 USI sees its record go to 14-13 overall and 5-9 in the GLVC, while KWC goes to 13-11, 7-5 GLVC.
 
The Screaming Eagles got back into the win column in game two when they scored two in the sixth and one in the seventh to break a 1-1 tie and defeat the Panthers, 4-2. USI senior first baseman Todd Martin (Rockport, Illinois) led the way for the Eagles, driving in the eventual winning runs with a two-run double in the sixth.
 
Junior catcher Colton White (Springfield, Illinois) sealed the victory in the seventh with a RBI single to put the Eagles up 4-1. The Panthers finished the scoring in the bottom half seventh, scoring one and leaving two runners on base.
 
USI scored first with a run in the fourth with KWC tying the game in the bottom half of the inning.
 
On the mound, junior right-hander Matthew Davidson (St. Charles, Missouri) picked the win. Davidson (1-1) pitched 2.2 innings, allowing two hits and one unearned run and striking out two. Sophomore right-hander Jim Mulvaney (Mt. Vernon, Indiana) threw the first 3.2 innings, allowing seven hits and one run.  
 
Junior left-hander Scott Cole (Patrick, Virginia) posted his first save of the year with a scoreless two-thirds of an inning.
 
The Eagles scored three times in the first inning of game one before the Panthers exploded nine unanswered runs to lead 9-3 after six innings. USI sophomore rightfielder Brent Weinzapfel (Evansville, Indiana) put a stop to the Panthers' offensive run by hitting hit a solo shot in the seventh to cut the lead to 9-4.
 
USI made it a new game with a five-run eighth and knotted the score at 9-9.  Senior second baseman Ryan Kaczmarski (Mishawaka, Indiana) cut the deficit to 9-5 with an RBI single, before White hit a game-tying grand slam to centerfield to tie the score. The home run was White's second of the year.
 
The Panthers posted the game in the win-column in the bottom of the ninth when KWC designated hitter Nathan Hedgepath singled in to winning run. Freshman right-hander Justin Ahlbrand (Evansville, Indiana) was charged with the loss after giving up a single to start the ninth.

 The Eagles return to the friendly surroundings of the USI Baseball Field Friday and Saturday when they host Bellarmine University for a four-game series. Game time for Friday doubleheader is 3 p.m. while Saturday's doubleheader first pitch is noon.
