EVANSVILLE, Ind.  – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team split a doubleheader with Lewis University for the second straight day at the USI Baseball Field. The Screaming Eagles took the opener, 5-3, but dropped the nightcap, 7-1. USI sees its record go to 22-19 overall and 13-15 in the GLVC, while Lewis goes to 28-13, 18-10 GLVC.

The Eagles scored three in the fourth and two in the fifth before holding on to win the first game, 5-3.

After the Flyers struck first with a home run in the top of the fourth, the Eagles exploded for three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Junior catcher Colton White (Springfield, Illinois) scored USI's first run of the game on a single by junior third baseman Reece Rounder (Evansville, Indiana). USI took the lead, 3-1, on a two-run double by senior first baseman Todd Martin (Rockport, Indiana), scoring senior designated hitter Dylan Mooney (St. Charles, Missouri) and Rounder.

The Eagles increased the lead to 5-1 in the fifth inning, beginning with a RBI-double by senior shortstop Brad Vance (Louisville, Kentucky). Vance scored USI's fifth run of the game when White singled to left.

The Flyers would try to rally in the top of the seventh, scoring twice, but sophomore right-hander Jim Mulvaney (Mt. Vernon, Illinois) came in to shut down the Lewis rally and strand the tying runs on base.

Mulvaney posted his second save of the year in relief of senior right-handed starter Silas Dill (Bernie, Missouri) and junior left-hander Adam Carver (Arthur, Illinois). Dill (4-6) picked up the win after going six-plus innings, allowing three runs on four hits and two walks.

Carver pitched two-thirds of the seventh inning, giving up a hit and a walk, before giving way to Mulvaney.

Lewis took command in the first inning of game two and went on to post a 7-1 victory. The Flyers, who outhit the Eagles, 10-7, scored three runs in the first, two in the seventh, one in the eighth, and a final tally in the ninth to earn the victory.

The Eagles pushed their only run of the nightcap across in the bottom of the seventh when Vance doubled to lead off the inning, advanced to third on a ground out, and scored on a ground out by Mooney.

On the mound, Mulvaney (2-2) took the loss in his third start of the year. The sophomore right-hander allowed four runs, one earned, on five hits, but struck out a career-high eight batters. Freshman right-hander Justin Ahlbrand (Evansville, Indiana), junior right-hander Ben Lady (Louisville, Kentucky), and junior right-hander Keith Greer (Lowell, Indiana) finished the game on the mound for USI.

The Eagles conclude the 15-game homestand Tuesday at 6 p.m. when they host Oakland City University at the USI Baseball Field. USI leads the all-time series with OCU, 81-10, but lost last year's meeting to the Mighty Oaks, 9-5.  Oakland City is 14-21 overall this spring after losing three games to Cedarville University on the road Friday and Saturday.
