SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The University of Southern Indiana men's tennis team advanced to the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament semifinals with a 5-0 victory over Quincy University Friday morning. USI rises to 20-2 overall, two victories shy of tying the program's single-season marks set in 1999 and 2001.
The GLVC Tournament is hosted by Drury University at the Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield, Missouri.
The Screaming Eagles soared through doubles action to post a 3-0 lead. Sophomore
Santiago Lopez and freshman
Michael Kuzaj at number one doubles put USI on the scoreboard with an 8-1 victory, while senior
Diego Gimenez and junior
Juan Quiroz matched them number two doubles with an identical 8-1 win. The victory by Gimenez and Quiroz at number two doubles tied the USI singles-season record for doubles victories (26).
Juniors
Ben Boesing and
Rodrigo Flores completed the doubles sweep with an 8-4 win in number three doubles.
The Eagles clinched the shutout when Lopez and Boesing recorded straight set victories at number two and three singles, respectively. Boesing increases his singles' record to 25-4 overall, four wins shy of tying the single-season record for singles victories (29).
USI, top seed from the GLVC East, moves to the GLVC Tournament semifinals this afternoon against the winner of the Rockhurst University-Lewis University match-up. Rockhurst is the second seed from the West Division, while Lewis is the third seed from the East. Match time is to be determined due to rain during the morning that forced matches indoors.
