Big innings propel the Eagles to 7-3 win

EVANSVILLE, Ind.  – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team scored four runs in the fourth and three in the seventh to defeat Kentucky Wesleyan College, 7-3, Tuesday night at the USI Baseball Field. USI sees its record go to 19-17 overall and 10-13 in the GLVC, while KWC goes to 14-21, 8-13 GLVC.
 
The Screaming Eagles and the Panthers conclude the two-game series at Wednesday with the first pitch set for 6 p.m.
 
After spotting the Panthers a 2-0 led in the top of the third, the Eagles erased the deficit with four runs on four hits in fourth. Senior leftfielder Brennan Malham (Auburn, Illinois) and junior catcher Colton White (Springfield, Illinois) led off the inning with singles and advanced into scoring position on a sacrifice by sophomore rightfielder Brent Weinzapfel (Evansville, Indiana).
 
Malham cut the KWC 2-0 lead in half when he scored on a RBI-single by senior shortstop Brad Vance (Louisville, Kentucky). Vance would steal second and junior third baseman Reece Rounder (Evansville, Indiana) walked to load the bases when senior second baseman Ryan Kaczmarski (Mishawaka, Indiana) singled to drive in White with the tying run.
 
The Eagles would take the lead one batter later when Vance scored on a fielder's choice by senior first baseman Todd Martin (Rockport, Indiana). USI would reload the bases on a walk to junior designated hitter B.J. Willis (Cincinnati, Ohio) and would score the eventual game-winning run when Rounder was forced in on a walk to sophomore centerfielder Brad Wannemuehler (Evansville, Indiana).  
 
USI maintained the 4-2 lead until the seventh when it score three insurance runs. Willis led off with a double, stole third, and scored the fifth run of the game on a sacrifice fly by White. Malham, who had walked and advanced to second on the sac fly, scored from second on a single by Weinzapfel to make the score 6-2.  Vance capped off the three-run inning with a RBI-double to score Weinzapfel from first.
 
The Panther tried to rally in the top of the ninth, but were only able to muster one more run off the Eagle hurlers. KWC left the bases loaded in the ninth and left 11 on for the game.
 
Vance, who was making his first start at shortstop since March 11, led the USI hitter with two hits, a double, a run scored, and two RBIs. Willis also had a pair of hits, including a double, and a run scored.
 
On the mound, freshman right-hander Justin Ahlbrand (Evansville, Indiana) posted his first collegiate win after four strong inning of relief work. Ahlbrand (1-1) allowed one run on four hits and struck one before giving way to junior left-hander Adam Carver (Arthur, Illinois) in the ninth.
 
Carver recorded his first save of the season and as an Eagle, allowing one hit and striking out one in two-thirds of an inning.
 
The Eagles got 4.1 innings from junior right-hander Keith Greer (Lowell, Indiana) to start the game. Greer allowed two runs, one earned, on eight hits and a walk before leaving in the fifth.
